Best Time to Visit

the Galápagos Islands

From snorkeling with sea lions to hiking an active volcano — every way to experience Galápagos, and the trips that include it.

Is There a Best Time to Visit?

Not really — the Galápagos sits on the equator and stays visitable year-round, with wildlife present in every season. The real question isn’t “when is best,” it’s what you want most: calmer, warmer water for easy snorkeling and family travel, or peak marine wildlife activity for diving and photography. Each season delivers one better than the other.

Best Time for Snorkeling & Diving

Snorkeling

The warm season’s calmer, clearer, warmer water suits beginners and families best.

Diving

The cool season’s nutrient-rich currents bring the marine wildlife density experienced divers come for — hammerheads, whale sharks, and mantas.

Best Time for Families

Families can visit year-round, but many parents prefer the warm season (December–May) for calmer seas and more predictable weather. Beyond climate, school holiday periods — December, March/April, and northern-hemisphere summer — are the busiest, so booking accommodations and tours well in advance is worth it regardless of season.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the single best month to visit the Galápagos?

There isn’t one — it depends on your priorities. March offers the warmest, calmest conditions; August offers peak marine wildlife activity. Both are excellent for different reasons.

When is whale shark season?

Whale sharks are most reliably seen at Darwin and Wolf Islands from June through November, during the cool season’s peak marine productivity.

Is the Galápagos ever a bad time to visit?

No — wildlife is present year-round and every month offers something distinct. The main planning consideration is crowding during school holiday periods, not weather.
